What to see and do in Ataquines

Ataquines
Village
Ataquines is a village of 580 inhabitants in the south of the province of Valladolid, near the border with Ávila and Segovia, on a plain barely altered by a few hills, among them Ataquín Alto, with a geodesic vertex at 842 metres. A local legend links its name to a mishap suffered by Isabella the Catholic on one of her journeys from Medina del Campo to Arévalo: when her shoelace came undone, the queen is said to have ordered her maid "ata aquí, Inés". Town status was granted in 1633, under Philip IV. The church of San Juan Bautista, from the 17th century and built of brick, stands where a fortress once stood, which is why residents call it "the castle"; in 1900 a fire that started at the school destroyed 320 houses in the village.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Ataquines
Monument
Raised in brick in the seventeenth century on the site of an old fortress, which is why the residents still call it the castle. It is the building of greatest bearing in a village of the plain of the south of the province.

Nature
The river marks the north-eastern limit of the municipal district, which moves between 750 and 842 metres over a barely undulating plain. The Mediterranean climate drifts here towards almost semi-arid conditions.
The origin of the name Ataquines
Curiosity
Tradition derives the place name from a phrase of Isabel la Católica who, when the lace of her shoe came undone during a journey, is said to have ordered her maid: ata aquí, Inés. The village obtained the title of villa in 1633.
The fire of Ataquines
Historical milestone
A fire that started in the school's heating swept through the built-up area and destroyed three hundred and twenty constructions. The village had to remake itself almost completely in the first years of the twentieth century.
