What to see and do in Curiel de Duero

Curiel de Duero
Village
Curiel de Duero, with 111 inhabitants, belongs to the comarca of Campo de Peñafiel, in Valladolid, within the group of villages known as Valle del Cuco; it has also been called Curiel de los Ajos. It is crowned by the oldest castle in the province, from the 10th century, where a coin of the emperor Arcadius was found, and it was the head of its own Comunidad de Villa y Tierra. It served as dowry to Leonor Plantagenet, wife of Alfonso VIII, and to the infanta Estefanía, whose tragic end inspired Lope de Vega to write the tragicomedy La Desdichada Estefanía in 1604; Berenguela la Grande, architect of the union of Castile and León, was also lady of Curiel. On 3 May the village adorns the Santa Cruz with sweets, fruit and wine, and dances the Mudanzas, catalogued by the Fundación Joaquín Díaz.
