Church of la Asunción de Castrillo de Duero Monument · Castrillo de Duero, Campo de Peñafiel, Valladolid Built in the second half of the 12th century, it preserves from that period the Romanesque chancel — rectangular on the outside and semicircular within, with two windows — while the rest of the church belongs to the Baroque, with three naves divided by pillars and round arches and a transept topped with a dome and lantern. The main altarpiece, in Rococo style, was the work of the sculptor Roque Muñoz between 1602 and 1605; it was removed from its original position after a restoration that uncovered fresco paintings on the high altar, and its central niche today holds an image of the Assumption of the Virgin from the late 18th century. It holds six other altarpieces and was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1998. Photo: Ydelpico (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Castrillo de Duero
