What to see and do in Retortillo de Soria

Retortillo de Soria
Village
Retortillo de Soria is a municipality of 126 inhabitants in the Tierras del Burgo district, in the south of the province of Soria, which groups together twelve other villages, among them Tarancueña and Torrevicente, on the northern slope of the sierra de Pela, at 1,243 metres, watered by the river Talegones. Its name comes from 'Río Tortiello', small and twisting river in early Castilian. Formerly settled by the Arévaci, it preserves schematic rock engravings — discovered in 1911 by Juan Cabré Agulló — in the Tambor cave and other nearby sites, as well as Celtiberian remains and the Roman road Tiermes-Medinaceli. The Ruta de la Lana and the Camino del Cid pass through its territory, and a good part of its soil, rich in limestone and reddish clays, is part of the region of the red villages.
The walled town and its two arches
Monument
The built fabric preserves intact a stretch of medieval wall and two of its four gates, flanked by large cylindrical towers: the arch of Sollera, of the fourteenth century, and the arch of Oriente, of the sixteenth.
The Camino del Cid through the fortified town
Activity
The locality is one of the signposted stages of the itinerary that follows the steps of the Cantar through the lands of Soria and Guadalajara, among watchtowers, páramos and walled towns of the old front between Castile and al-Andalus.
The churro lechazo of the southern plateaus
Food and drink
The lamb of the churra breed raised on these páramos is roasted in a wood-fired oven with only water and salt, in an earthenware dish. It is protected by the protected geographical indication Lechazo de Castilla y León.
