What to see and do in Valtajeros

Valtajeros
Village
Valtajeros is a municipality in the province of Soria, in the comarca of Tierras Altas, with 16 inhabitants according to the 2025 register and an area of 22.93 square kilometres, more than half of which forms part of the Natura 2000 Network. Within its territory lies the depopulated site of Torretarrancho. During the Middle Ages it was part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Magaña as a town exempted from the Duke of Santisteban, and after the fall of the Old Regime it was constituted as a municipality of the district of Ágreda, which in the 1842 census had 50 households and 196 inhabitants. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora del Collado, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in the monument category in 2007, and the La Callejuela site, protected as an archaeological zone since 2005.

Monument
The church of Our Lady of Collado, in Valtajeros, was built in the 12th century in a border enclave between Christians and Muslims and on the boundary with Navarre, which explains its fortress-like appearance: its walls are topped with battlements and arrow slits, and the east wall ends in a double-opening bell-gable. The doorway, on the south wall and hidden by a later porch, shows two plain archivolts over undecorated jambs. Its interior, with a single nave, is covered by a very pointed barrel vault divided into four bays, with a square apse unusual for the area. Declared a monument on 26 March 2007, it is the main building of a municipality of sixteen inhabitants, situated at 1,253 metres and one of the highest and most depopulated in the province.

Curiosity
Declared on 5 May 2005, it adds to the abandoned site of Torretarrancho, the municipality's second settlement, today completely abandoned: two layers of depopulation separated by centuries.

Nature
The site of Community importance that it shares with the neighbouring village occupies 1,282 hectares, 56% of the municipal district, and protects the upland pastures and scrub through which the drove roads ran.
