What to see and do in Abejar

Abejar
Village
Abejar is a town of about 290 inhabitants in the Pinares district, in the province of Soria, known as “the gateway to Pinares” because it opens the way to the pine forests of Urbión and the upper basin of the Duero. The village stands at 1,138 metres, on terrain that reaches 1,338 metres at the point known as La Atalaya, to the south, within the Site of Community Importance of the Sabinares de la sierra de Cabrejas. It preserves the Gothic church of San Juan Bautista, the remains of a masonry watchtower and a branch of the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental. It lives on the timber and food industries, and especially on mycology: every February and March it holds the Feria de la Trufa de Soria de Abejar (Truffle Fair), with gastronomic events devoted to this product.
The Moorish Tower of Abejar
Monument
In the municipal district are preserved the ruins of a Muslim watchtower some three metres high, a remnant of the system of watchtowers that linked the valley of the Duero with the sierra.
The Church of San Juan Bautista
Monument
A Gothic church raised between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, accompanied by the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Camino, of the eighteenth, patroness of the village and centrepiece of the festivities of mid-August.
The Truffle Fair
Activity
Between February and March the village holds a fair devoted to the black truffle, a crop that has spread across the limestone soils of the Sierra de Cabrejas and has become an economic alternative for the district. The black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) lives in symbiosis with holm oaks, which cover much of the mountains of Soria; the Soria Truffle Growers' Association, with around forty members, registered the Trufa de Soria brand as a step towards a future Designation of Origin. In 2016, as part of the Soria Gastronómica International Congress of Mycology, this black truffle was twinned with the white truffle of Alba.
La Barrosa
Activity
On the Saturday before Ash Wednesday the village brings out its traditional carnival, which shares the calendar with the Candelas and San Blas of 2 and 3 February and with the feast of San Juan in June.
The Juniper Grove of the Sierra de Cabrejas
Nature
The municipal district takes part in this site of Community importance, an extensive forest of Spanish juniper on limestone moorland, a relict species able to withstand the extreme cold and the drought of the interior.
