What to see and do in Cidones

Cidones
Village
Cidones is a municipality of 313 inhabitants in the comarca of Soria, on the way to the pine forests, which also groups together the hamlets of Herreros, Ocenilla and Villaverde del Monte. It stretches between the sierra de Cabrejas to the south and a flatter area to the north, with the embalse de Cuerda del Pozo reservoir within its boundaries; it had a railway station on the línea Santander-Mediterráneo, operating between 1929 and 1985. It preserves houses built by indianos and the chimneys typical of the pine-forest area, and forms part of the ruta machadiana de Alvargonzález, laid out along the excursion that Antonio Machado made through this area in 1910, which inspired his poem La tierra de Alvargonzález.
Reservoir of la Cuerda del Pozo
Nature
The Cuerda del Pozo reservoir holds back the waters of the Duero at its source, at the foot of the Sierra de Cabrejas and the peaks of Urbión, and occupies part of the territory of Cidones, in the province of Soria. Its construction was approved in 1923 and finished in 1941, with Republican political prisoners as the workforce after the Civil War; it is also known as the La Muedra reservoir, after the name of the flooded village whose church tower can still be seen emerging in the middle of the reservoir. With a dam 36 metres high and a capacity of 249 million cubic metres, it ranks among the six largest reservoirs in the country within the Duero basin, and has become the province's great expanse of open water, with beaches such as Pita, where windsurfing, sailing and fishing are practised.
The Machado-themed route of Alvargonzález
Curiosity
The municipality forms part of the route that follows in the steps of Antonio Machado on his journey of 1910 through these lands, out of which came La tierra de Alvargonzález, the long ballad of crime and greed included in Campos de Castilla.
The station of Cidones
Historical milestone
The village had a station at kilometre point 112.701 of the Santander-Mediterráneo Iberian-gauge line, at 1082 metres above sea level, built by the Compañía del Ferrocarril Santander-Mediterráneo and in service between 1929 and 1985. In 1941, with the nationalisation of the Iberian-gauge railways, it passed into the hands of RENFE, and around 1967 it was downgraded and reclassified as a halt. Its closure, along with that of the whole line in 1985, left without a train a region that was already losing population and today has 313 inhabitants spread across four settlements; the old facilities now stand abandoned.
