What to see and do in Salduero

Salduero
Village
Salduero is a locality in Soria of about 150 inhabitants on the banks of the Duero, in the heart of the pine forest of the Pinares comarca. In the Census of Pecheros of 1528 it appeared under the name Salguero with 53 tax-paying family units. It was the birthplace of the painter Maximino Peña Muñoz (1863-1940). It retains the church of San Juan Bautista, the hermitages of Santo Cristo and Santa Elena, its old stone bridge and a fountain honouring the trade of wagoner, which the village once lived from.
The Salduero Bridge over the Duero
Monument
A stone bridge with a wooden deck that crosses the Duero beside the village, one of the historic crossings of the river on its upper reach and a characteristic element of the pinariego village of the left bank.
The Fountain in Tribute to the Carter
Curiosity
The village dedicated a fountain to the carters, the hauliers who for centuries took the timber out of these pine woods to the shipyards and the cities of Castile in ox-drawn carts.
The Church of San Juan Bautista de Salduero
Monument
The village's parish church, accompanied by the hermitages of the Santo Cristo and of Santa Elena; in the taxpayer census of 1528 the place appeared as Salguero with fifty-three taxpaying households.
The Painter Maximino Peña
Curiosity
Maximino Peña Muñoz, born in Salduero on 29 May 1863 and who died in Madrid in 1940, was a painter especially gifted in pastel, with an extensive body of work of sketches, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Trained in Madrid, he settled in Rome in 1885 alongside painters such as Sorolla, Benlliure and Moreno Carbonero, and took part in nineteen National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, where he won several medals, among them a second-class medal in 1895 for El bocadillo. He took part in the decoration of the basilica of San Francisco el Grande and opened a drawing studio in Madrid that his descendants later expanded as the Academia Peña. He was made a Knight of the Order of Charles III; streets bear his name in Soria, Salduero, Almazán and Madrid, and in Salduero a house-museum dedicated to him is preserved.
