What to see and do in Cihuela

Cihuela
Village
Cihuela is a village of 35 inhabitants in the province of Soria, on the border with Aragon - it borders Torrijo de la Cañada and Villalengua, already on Aragonese land - within the comarca of Campo de Gómara. The río Henar runs through it, and a good part of its territory, the Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves Cihuela-Deza, is included in the Red Natura 2000. It preserves the castle attributed to don Álvaro de Luna, the parish church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, the hermitage of San Roque, the Fuente Vieja and the palace of the dukes of Medinaceli. Near the border with Zaragoza two coal mines, now abandoned, remain. Its main festivities are those of San Roque, from 14 to 17 August, as well as the Virgen del Sagrario on 6 May and El Rosario on the first Sunday of October.
The Castle of don Álvaro de Luna
Monument
The fortress that dominates the village bears the name of the Constable of Castile; it stands on a site on the frontier with Aragon that changed hands repeatedly during the late medieval wars.
The Palace of the Dukes of Medinaceli
Monument
The lords of Medinaceli had a palatial house here, preserved alongside the church of La Asunción de Nuestra Señora and the hermitage of San Roque in a village of thirty-five inhabitants.
The Abandoned Coal Mines
Curiosity
Near the boundary with the province of Zaragoza remain the workings of coal mines now abandoned, which gave work to the village when it still had more than four hundred inhabitants, as in 1842.
The Cihuela-Deza Bird Area
Nature
This special protection area for birds occupies 1,734 hectares, 51% of the municipal district, and shelters the steppe and cliff-dwelling species of the Henar valley at 841 metres of altitude.
San Roque and the Virgen del Sagrario
Activity
The village celebrates San Roque from 14 to 17 August, the Virgen del Sagrario on 6 May and the Virgen del Rosario in October, three dates that punctuate the year of a minimal population.
