What to see and do in Ariza

Ariza
Village
Ariza is a town in the Comunidad de Calatayud comarca, in Zaragoza, at 763 m altitude beside the Jalón river, which crosses it from west to east, with 1,096 inhabitants (INE 2025). Under Muslim rule it had a mosque and walls with three gates, and by the late 11th century it was one of the most important towns in the Jalón valley; Alfonso I the Battler reconquered it in 1120, although it also belonged to Castile at various times, until Peter II granted the people of Ariza freedom and exemption from tribute in 1213. Its church of Santa María la Real dates from the 16th century, with three naves covered by a star-ribbed vault. Peter IV sold Ariza in 1381 to his standard-bearer Guillén de Palafox; the alteraciones de Ariza, a revolt against that lordship, ended in 1490 with the execution of its leaders.

The Ariza disturbances
Historical milestone
A revolt by the inhabitants of Ariza against the lordship of the Palafox family, to whom Peter IV had sold the town in 1381 to finance the war of Sardinia. In 1490 the peasants refused to submit to Guillén de Palafox and sought to come under the crown's authority instead; the uprising failed, ended with the execution of its leaders and Ferdinand the Catholic confirmed the seigniorial rights. There was a second revolt under Guillén's successor, and in 1561 the lord Juan de Palafox was murdered, which provoked harsh repression by the viceroy of Aragon and new punishments approved by Philip II in 1585. It was a conflict running parallel to others in the Crown of Aragon, such as the War of Ribagorza, which foreshadowed the Alteraciones de Aragón of 1591 and consolidated a seigniorial dominion that lasted until the 19th century.
