What to see and do in Deza

Deza
Village
Deza is a municipality in the comarca of Campo de Gómara, in the province of Soria, on the border with Zaragoza, watered by the río Henar or Lerar, and also includes the settlements of La Alameda and Miñana; it has 162 inhabitants. Built on rocky ground, it is honeycombed with tunnels and cellars, among them a passage running from the church to the Esteras family's palace. In a raised area of the territory a Roman camp has been located that would have protected the nearby Celtiberian city of Titiakos, and at Valdecatalán the 6th-century Visigothic necropolis was found, with a hundred graves, discovered by the archaeologist Blas Taracena. Next to the village several springs flow, such as Los Ojos, two wells about six metres deep from which water constantly flows.
The Church of the Asunción of Deza
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Deza, in the west of this Sorian locality, is a notable example of the Gothic hall-church or hallenkirche model, with its three naves covered at the same height and pillars of circular section that give it a slender elevation, as at Berlanga de Duero or San Pedro de Soria. The central nave, somewhat wider, and the side naves each have four bays, and close in a shallow, polygonal-ended main chapel. Its vaults, from the mid-16th century, display complex late Gothic tracery, simpler in the main chapel, where the roofing work would have begun. Deza was a strategic town of the lordship of the Dukes of Medinaceli, who had an important fortress there. The church has been a protected monument since 1993.
The Fortified House of the Hinojosa Family
Monument
A square-plan building with two towers and a two-storey arcaded courtyard, the town's finest example of seigneurial architecture, which also preserves the palaces of the Barnuevo and the Esteras.
La Fortaleza and the Arab Wall
Monument
The hill called La Fortaleza kept until the nineteenth century the castle and the entrance arch of the walled enclosure raised by the Muslims and later reinforced by the Christians.
The Horseshoe-Shaped Bullring
Curiosity
The town's bullring has a horseshoe-shaped plan and is partly cut into the ground, so that the natural slope serves as the stands: a solution unique in the province.
The Privileges Granted to the Mudéjares
Historical milestone
Alfonso VIII, who reigned between 1158 and 1214, granted Deza privileges giving favorable treatment to its Muslim residents, confirmed by successive kings up to Felipe II; the village thus retained a notable Morisco population.
The First Mention of Dezam
Historical milestone
The name Deza first appears in the chronicles of Alfonso III, who reigned between 866 and 910, in the form Dezam; between the 13th and 15th centuries the stronghold changed hands several times between the crowns of Castile and Aragón.
The Lóbrega Cave
Nature
Among the springs and cavities of the municipal district this cave stands out, which may have been used by the Celtiberians; the special protection area for birds of Cihuela-Deza covers 2,742 hectares of the municipality.
Potters, Weavers and Millers
Curiosity
The town, which in 1842 had 1,342 inhabitants and four hundred houses, lived on pottery, on weaving linen and hemp and on the mills of the river Henar before being reduced to a little over 160 households.
The Lamb of the Soria Dry Farmland
Food and drink
The flocks of sheep that use the stubble after the harvest give the lamb roasted whole in a bread oven, the dish of the patronal festivals in every village of the southeast of the province.
