What to see and do in Rello

Rello
Village
Rello is a walled medieval town of 21 inhabitants in the comarca of Berlanga, in Soria, enclosed atop a limestone crag with the castle at one end; it belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Berlanga until the 15th century, when it gained the title of town within the lordship of the Count of Coruña, and was declared a Conjunto Histórico (a Spanish heritage-protection category for historic town ensembles) in 2001. Its municipal area is included in the Natura 2000 network as a site of community importance and a special protection area for birds of the Altos de Barahona. Nearby stands the Torre del Tiñón, an unusually cone-shaped caliphal watchtower, halfway to Bordecorex, where legend places the death of Almanzor, who was retreating badly wounded towards Medinaceli.
The walled precinct of Rello
Monument
The village preserves intact its belt of medieval walls set on a limestone cliff, with a castle and tower at one end; the ensemble was declared a bien de interés cultural on 8 November 2001.
The pillory and the church of the Assumption
Monument
Within the enclosure stand the justice pillory, symbol of the title of villa attained in the fifteenth century under the lordship of the Count of Coruña, and the parish church of La Asunción, which presides over the square.
The Torre del Tiñón
Monument
Northwest of the village stands a Caliphal watchtower of conical profile, uncommon among the frontier towers; local tradition associates it with the death of Almanzor, which in fact took place at Medinaceli.
Twenty-one residents behind the walls
Curiosity
The 2025 register gave twenty-one inhabitants for a village that in 1842 had 230 and fifty-eight houses; the walled enclosure today encloses more empty plots than occupied dwellings.
The entire municipal area protected
Nature
The 24 square kilometres of the municipality are entirely included in the Natura 2000 Network as a site of community importance and a special protection area for birds of the Altos de Barahona.
