What to see and do in Arenillas

Arenillas
Village
Arenillas is a hamlet in the comarca of Berlanga, in the province of Soria, with 29 inhabitants, crossed by the Riojana or Galiana drove road and by the Talegones river, a tributary of the Duero. Two other settlements once stood within its boundaries, Tejarejo and Villaseca, already depopulated before 1594. It lives from cereal farming, sheep raising and the distillation of lavender and lavandin, activities through which a handful of residents try to curb the depopulation affecting southwestern Soria; since 2015 it has also organised the Boina Fest, the first festival against depopulation in Soria and the Serranía Celtibérica. It preserves the church of San Cipriano y Santa Justina, with Gothic elements, the hermitage of San Martín, next to the cemetery, and a recently restored Roman ashlar fountain.
The church of San Cipriano and Santa Justina
Monument
The parish church preserves Gothic elements in a fabric that nineteenth-century documents described as large and well built, out of all proportion for a village that today does not reach thirty households.
The restored ashlar fountain
Monument
In the lower part of the village a stone fountain is preserved with ashlar in its lower body, attributed to the Roman period and recovered in a recent intervention, one of the few ancient remnants in the municipal district.
The Boina Fest against depopulation
Activity
Since 2015 the village has held on the first or second Saturday of August a protest festival against rural emptying that multiplies the municipality's population by a hundred for a day.
The deserted villages of Villaseca and Tejarejo
Historical milestone
The two places in the municipal district already figured as deserted settlements in the counts of the late sixteenth century: the comarca has been losing hamlets for more than four centuries, long before the exodus of the twentieth.
The Talegones and Parado rivers
Nature
Both watercourses cross a sandy municipal district of 30 square kilometres at 1,097 metres of altitude, with unirrigated dry farmland and narrow meadows where the poplar groves are concentrated.
