What to see and do in La Riba de Escalote

La Riba de Escalote
Village
La Riba de Escalote is one of the most depopulated municipalities in Spain, with 9 inhabitants, situated in the comarca of Berlanga, in the province of Soria, and was once part of the old comunidad de villa y tierra of Berlanga. 66% of its municipal area is protected within the Natura 2000 network, in the Altos de Barahona area. In the mid-19th century it had 54 houses and 170 inhabitants, figures far removed from today's. A mass grave of victims of Spanish Civil War reprisals has also been located there. It preserves the church of San Miguel Arcángel, the hermitage of San Hipólito, the fountain known as El Piojo, and the Hojaraca or Torre Melero watchtower, listed as a castle by the Junta de Castilla y León since 1983, as well as the site known as La Mesa del Moro.
The Hojaraca Watchtower
Monument
Also called Torre Melero, this medieval watchtower in the municipal district has been protected under the category of castle since 1983; it controlled the upper stretch of the Escalote valley.
The Mesa del Moro and the Fuente del Piojo
Curiosity
Two singular place names mark spots in the municipal district: a rocky platform that tradition attributes to the Moors and a spring of not very elegant name that supplied the village, today of nine inhabitants.
The Honey of the Juniper Grove
Food and drink
The thyme, lavender and gorse of the Altos de Barahona feed traditional apiaries that give dark, highly aromatic honeys, an ancient use of these unirrigated moorlands.
