What to see and do in Baraona

Baraona
Village
Baraona is a municipality in the Soria comarca of Almazán that groups together, besides the eponymous locality, the settlements of Jodra de Cardos, Pinilla del Olmo and Romanillos de Medinaceli, with 117 inhabitants in total. The town lies 62 kilometres south of Soria, at the crossroads of the roads from Guadalajara to Almazán and Soria with that from Medinaceli to Retortillo; its municipal area covers 116.59 km². The name is written interchangeably Baraona or Barahona, and its ancient history is linked to the undocumented legend of the Varona, who according to tradition defeated the king of Aragon Alfonso the Battler while wearing her sick father's armour. Its Baroque church of San Miguel stands on the old castle hill and ends in a weathervane bearing the figure of this legendary Varona, María Pérez.
The Altos de Barahona bird protection area
Nature
Between the Sierra Ministra and the Sierra de Pela these limestone uplands extend above one thousand metres, among the towns of Torrevicente, Barcones, Rello, Barahona and Alpanseque, among others. Covering 42,898 hectares, it is both a Special Protection Area for Birds and a Site of Community Importance. Notable are its oromediterranean heathlands with gorse, its alpine and subalpine meadows and its kermes oak scrub, together with springs and streams with riverside vegetation and a remarkable diversity of orchids. Among the birds of prey that breed here are the Eurasian eagle-owl, Montagu's harrier, griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture and red kite, and the upland holds one of the largest populations in the world of Dupont's lark, with around 2,200 pairs, as well as little bustard, stone curlew and great bustard.
The Dupont's lark of the plateaus
Nature
These plains hold the largest breeding population of Dupont's lark in Castilla y León, around a thousand pairs, and figure among the two most important centres of this threatened bird in the whole of Europe.
The cushion scrubland of the limestone plateau
Nature
On limestone and poor soils grow dry pastures and thorny formations of stunted bearing: hedgehog broom, savory and bolinas withstand frost and drought here, and it is precisely that low scrub that is the habitat the Dupont's lark requires.
Birdwatching in the plains of Barahona
Activity
The moorlands are one of the signposted ornithological destinations of the province. Observation is concentrated in the first hours of the spring day, when the Dupont's lark, the calandra lark and the short-toed lark sing.
