What to see and do in Villasayas

Villasayas
Village
Villasayas is a Sorian town of 59 inhabitants, in the judicial district of Almazán, belonging today to the diocese of Osma and formerly to the bishopric of Sigüenza, in the archpriesthood of Barahona. A good part of its municipal area, included in the Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance and bird protection area, forms part of the Altos de Barahona. In the 1842 census it had 140 households and 602 residents, a figure far higher than today's, and at the end of the 20th century it absorbed the municipal area of Fuentegelmes. Its parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), in the monument category, on 7 April 1993.

Monument
Of the church of the Asunción the doorway and the gallery are Romanesque, of the second half of the twelfth century. It is the arcaded gallery situated furthest south in the province and its sculpture betrays the influence of the cloister of Silos.
The declaration of la Asunción as a national monument
Historical milestone
The church obtained the maximum legal protection in 1993, and in the nineties the restoration was undertaken that dismantled the walls that had blocked up the arches of the gallery for generations.
