What to see and do in Barcones

Barcones
Village
Barcones is a municipality in the comarca of Berlanga, in the province of Soria, where the Escalote river, a tributary of the Duero, is born, rising from springs such as El Borbollón before continuing its course towards Rello, Caltojar and Berlanga; it has 25 inhabitants. It is an ancient settlement, with prehistoric cisterns and rock excavations, and after the Reconquista it belonged to the alfoz of Atienza and later to the lordship of Paredes. Its church of San Miguel, with Romanesque and Gothic remains, burned down in the 19th century and was rebuilt, preserving the wall core and the upper part of the original portal. Three Muslim watchtowers remain, which watched from this valley over the entrance to the alcazaba of Atienza; the best preserved, Valdelatorre, reaches five metres.
The church of San Miguel de Barcones
Monument
It mixes Gothic and Romanesque elements in a fabric that had to be rebuilt after the fire that destroyed it in the nineteenth century; it presides over a village that once had a hundred and twenty-seven houses.
The manor house of the Gamboa family
Monument
The ancestral house of the family that concentrated land ownership in the municipality, with an ashlar doorway and coat of arms; it is the most substantial civil building of a village today of barely twenty-five inhabitants.
The source of the Escalote river
Nature
The Escalote rises in the municipal district, held to be one of the fullest-flowing tributaries of the Duero in this stretch; its valley organises the whole comarca of Berlanga until it flows in downstream of the town.
The towers that watched over Atienza
Curiosity
Three Muslim watchtowers were raised in the municipal district to control the approaches to the citadel of Atienza; the village later belonged to its jurisdiction and afterwards to the lordship of Paredes.
The Lechazo of the Barahona Moorlands
Food and drink
The churra sheep that grazes the juniper scrub and the stubble of these heights gives the milk-fed lamb roasted in an earthenware dish with water and salt, the dish of the patronal festivals in every village of the moorland.
