What to see and do in Alpanseque

Alpanseque
Village
Alpanseque is a municipality of about fifty inhabitants in the comarca of Almazán, Soria, made up of Alpanseque and Marazovel; its territory forms part of the steppe uplands of Barahona, with heathland, holm oak groves and a notable population of Dupont's lark, one of the most extensive in the world, along with birds of prey such as the eagle owl and the Egyptian vulture. By around 1842 the municipality had 286 inhabitants in 71 households. Its church of the Asunción began as a Romanesque temple in the late 12th century, though in the 17th century the original apse was replaced with a flat one on a cruciform plan and the tower was built; it retains a doorway with three archivolts showing hunting scenes, which remained walled up until 1985, when it came back into view.
The Celtiberian necropolis excavated by Cerralbo
Nature
In 1916 the Marquis of Cerralbo excavated between Alpanseque and Barahona a great necropolis of the second half of the fourth century BC with close to three hundred burials; the grave goods are kept in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional.
The Romanesque portal found in 1985
Curiosity
Of the Romanesque church only the south wall remains, today inside the cemetery. The discovery of its doorway in 1985 revalued the ensemble: its tympanum and its archivolts present an iconography without parallel in Soria.
The farmlands and wetlands of Alpanseque
Nature
The cereal plains dotted with temporary lagoons and stock ponds of the south of the province form one of the signposted ornithological itineraries of Soria, with steppe birds and waders on passage.
