What to see and do in Frechilla de Almazán

Frechilla de Almazán
Village
Frechilla de Almazán is a municipality in the comarca of Almazán, in the province of Soria, with twenty inhabitants, situated on a high plateau typical of the Northern Meseta at 984 metres above sea level, descending from the sierra de Ontalvilla, at 1,146 metres, towards the river Duero, 44 kilometres from the provincial capital. The municipal area includes the settlements of La Miñosa and Torremediana, incorporated in the mid-19th century, when Madoz's Dictionary counted 26 houses in the place; the 1842 census still credited it with 29 households and 112 inhabitants. Until the 1916 reform of municipal nomenclature, the municipality was called simply Frechilla, the date on which it adopted its current name of Frechilla de Almazán.
The late Romanesque apse of San Andrés
Monument
The parish church keeps a notably tall late Romanesque chevet, topped by corbels carved with faces and other figures. The place belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Almazán and afterwards to the marquisate.
The rammed-earth houses of the Plaza Mayor
Curiosity
Around the square several rammed-earth houses are preserved with double-leaf doors, handmade knockers and good ironwork: a catalogue of vernacular earth architecture that in Soria is disappearing fast.
