What to see and do in Velamazán

Velamazán
Village
Velamazán is a municipality in the district of Almazán, in the province of Soria, which includes the settlements of Fuente Tovar and Rebollo de Duero, merged with the latter in 1970. It belongs to the diocese of Osma, and until 1955 was part of the bishopric of Sigüenza. With 66 inhabitants, it preserves the palace of the marquesses of Velamazán, of the González de Castejón family, a watchtower and the 17th-century baroque church of the Santa Cruz; that of San Sebastián, now in ruins, is used as a cemetery.

Monument
The González de Castejón family raised this palace in the seventeenth century beside the church of the Santa Cruz. The village also preserves the pillory or whipping post, rough and very old, symbol of its condition as a villa.

Historical milestone
The locality belonged to the marquisate of Velamazán, of the powerful González de Castejón family, rich transhumant stock owners whose wool income paid in the seventeenth century for the palace and the parish church.
