What to see and do in Matamala de Almazán

Matamala de Almazán
Village
Matamala de Almazán is a municipality in the comarca of Almazán, in the province of Soria, that groups together the localities of Matamala, Matute de Almazán and Santa María del Prado, with about 250 inhabitants. In 1892 a station of the Torralba-Soria railway was opened in Matamala, today without a stop, and in the 20th century some scenes of the film Doctor Zhivago, by David Lean, were shot here. Its church is dedicated to the Purísima Concepción, and from 13 to 17 September it celebrates the feast of the Santo Cristo del Amparo, proclaimed by the village's festive clubs. On the first Sunday of May the young men bring down from the mountain, on a cart pulled by a donkey, a great tree which they plant in the square and which is felled on 3 July, the day of San Trifón.
The Romanesque portal of la Inmaculada
Monument
The parish church preserves a Romanesque doorway of the beginning of the thirteenth century, the piece of greatest value in the village, in a municipal district dominated ever since by the pine wood and today included in the Natura 2000 Network.
The Río Izana Nature Centre and the Resin Museum
Activity
Installed in the old schools beside the washing place, the centre interprets the pine wood and keeps a museum of resin, with workshops on resin tapping, mycology and woodland trades for schoolchildren and visitors.

Nature
The municipal district is for the most part a wood of resin pine declared a Special Protection Area for Birds. Beneath the cover of black pine, the undergrowth of rockrose and heather alternates with clearings of cultivation.
