What to see and do in Morón de Almazán

Morón de Almazán
Village
Morón de Almazán is a town in the province of Soria, next to the settlement of Señuela, whose name alludes to the castle hill on which it sits. A border between Castile and Aragon in the Middle Ages, it was besieged in 1128 by Alfonso I the Battler and later fortified by Alfonso VII; it received the title of town from Ferdinand IV in 1304 and later passed to the lordship of the Mendoza family. It has about 196 inhabitants and retains a main square of 16th-century buildings with a rollo jurisdiccional (column of justice); its Gothic church of the Asunción displays a four-tiered Plateresque tower, built in 1540 by the lord of Mendoza. It had a station on the Valladolid-Ariza line, closed to passenger traffic in 1985.
The terraced main square of Morón
Monument
A sixteenth-century Renaissance ensemble arranged in levels: above the church, on the intermediate level the palace and below the civil power. The gradation translates into stone the social hierarchy of the period and it is entered from the south.
The Plateresque tower of la Asunción
Monument
Finished in 1540, the tower of square plan is articulated in four sections in height and ends in a strongly projecting cornice. It presides over the square from the upper level and is the visual reference of the whole ensemble.
The jurisdictional pillar of Morón
Curiosity
This Gothic pillory of the beginning of the sixteenth century proclaimed the right of the council to pass sentence in the name of the king. It stood beside the town hall and today rises in the centre of the Renaissance square.
The Museum of Soria Folk Costume
Monument
The Palace of the Hurtado de Mendoza family, which Juan Hurtado de Mendoza and his wife, Leonor del Río, had built in the early 16th century in the centre of the Plaza Mayor of Morón de Almazán —one of the finest Renaissance architectural ensembles in Spain—, today houses the Provincial Museum of Traditional Costume of Soria, with festive, working and ceremonial garments from across the province. Created on the initiative of the Provincial Council of Soria and opened in 2012, it is run by the company Soriamuséum, which also organises children's workshops, demonstrations and seminars.
