Urueñas
Village
Urueñas is a town of about 105 inhabitants of the Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda, capital of the ochavo de las Pedrizas y Valdenavares since its medieval founding; like the whole tierra de Sepúlveda, it always belonged to the royal domain (realengo). Its name appears to come from settlers who arrived from Urueña (Valladolid). It lies north of Sepúlveda, on stony ground watered by a stream that flows into the Duratón, and traditionally grew cereals, chickpeas, hemp and vegetables. On its land there were several deserted villages, such as Bálsamos, documented since the 11th century. It preserves the parish church of San Juan Bautista, of rural Romanesque origin though today a large Gothic structure, with a four-tier bell-gable, a Romanesque baptismal font and five Baroque altarpieces.
