What to see and do in Sepúlveda

Sepúlveda
Village
Sepúlveda is a town in the province of Segovia, declared a historic-artistic site in 1951, overlooking the Hoces del Río Duratón natural park, whose interpretation centre it houses. Its name, of uncertain pre-Roman origin, may derive from the Celtiberian hillfort of Seppobrica or from a word that would mean river of the ditch or river of the mountains; the earliest evidence of its occupation dates back to the second Iron Age, between the 5th and 2nd centuries BC, when an oppidum of the Arevaci tribe stood on the nearby hill of Somosierra. As the head town of the Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda, it preserves the castle of Fernán González and the Romanesque church of the Virgen de la Peña, and celebrates the Fiesta de los Fueros in July. It has about 979 inhabitants.

Nature
The Hoces del Río Duratón natural park protects the canyon that this tributary of the Duero has carved into the limestone rock of the north-east of the province of Segovia, along its middle stretch between Sepúlveda, Sebúlcor and Carrascal del Río, with walls up to a hundred metres high. Declared a natural park on 27 June 1989, it covers 5,037 hectares and has been part of the Natura 2000 network as an SPA since 1991 and an SCI since 1998. It is home to the largest European colony of griffon vulture, with 575 pairs recorded in 2003, and preserves notable heritage, including the hermitage of San Frutos and the monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Hoz. Sepúlveda, declared a historic-artistic site, is home to the park's visitor centre.
