Prádena
Village
Prádena is a town of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda, in the province of Segovia, at 1,124 meters of altitude on the western slope of the Montes Carpetanos, next to the border with Madrid; it has about 473 inhabitants and has been the head town of its ochavo since Ferdinand IV granted it mountain lands for trade and grazing. Famous for the Enebralejos cave, with more than 3,600 meters of galleries, in the 15th century it lived off wool, with looms and fulling mills, and its transhumant shepherds traveled the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental; it preserves a jargon of its own, that of its muleteers. In the 17th century, its period of greatest splendor, the neoclassical church of San Martín was raised with donations from livestock owners. After the decline of the 20th century, today it lives mainly off rural tourism.
