Moral de Hornuez
Village
Moral de Hornuez is a village in the province of Segovia, with 38 inhabitants, located at the center of a comarca equidistant from Sepúlveda, Riaza and Aranda de Duero, formerly part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Maderuelo, where it once had as many as 560 inhabitants in the 1960s. Its sanctuary of the Virgen de Hornuez, in a meadow of thousand-year-old junipers two kilometers from the village, commemorates the apparition that tradition dates to 1246, before transhumant shepherds who were trying to light a fire; both Moral and neighboring Maderuelo tried to take the image away, but it always returned to the same spot. A judicial record from 1697 gathers the testimony of ten witnesses about this tradition. Its main pilgrimage is celebrated on the last Sunday of May.
