Cilleruelo de San Mamés
Village
Cilleruelo de San Mamés is a hamlet of the Community of Town and Land of Maderuelo, in the province of Segovia, with 41 inhabitants, although in summer and on weekends its population multiplies to as many as two hundred. Its name comes from cillero, the pantry or cellar where grain was stored, to which San Mamés, the patron saint, was added in the 19th century. The parish church of San Mamés, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1994, preserves in its chancel a fragment of Romanesque cornice and combines, after successive alterations, a Gothic sacristy with a large Baroque bell-gable; it also holds a 16th-century Renaissance processional cross and an 18th-century monstrance. On 17 August it celebrates its patron saint, and on the last Sunday of May, over three days, the Virgen de Hornuez pilgrimage.
