Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela
Village
Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela is a town of about 121 inhabitants in the north of the province of Segovia, bordering Burgos, next to the Hoces del Río Riaza natural park, where vultures breed. Recorded in 1011 as Montelionem, it was not repopulated until the late 11th century by people from Haza and Torregalindo, and by 1123 it already appears as Monteio de la Vega de la Serrezuela. It was the head town of its own Comunidad de Villa y Tierra. It preserves the walls and remains of the castle, the church of San Andrés Apóstol with a collection of silverware, a Roman bridge over the Riaza, a water mill and the ruins of the monastery of San Martín del Casuar, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1997.
