Milagros
Village
Milagros is a municipality of 409 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero of Burgos, beside the Norte motorway which crosses it about 95 kilometres from the capital, and watered by the río Riaza. Works carried out in 1969–70 and again in 1994, when raising the surface of a street near the church, brought to light a Roman mosaic revealing the existence of a villa on what is today the centre of the village. In its surroundings a Civil War grave was also located, containing victims of Republican reprisals, exhumed by an international team of archaeologists and anthropologists led by the forensic scientist Francisco Etxeberria, who went on to document some thirty civilian bodies from progressive organisations buried in September 1936. Its church bears the dedication of Santa María del Milagro.
