Riaguas de San Bartolomé
Village
Riaguas de San Bartolomé is a village of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda, in the province of Segovia, with 28 inhabitants, whose old water tank has become an astronomical observatory, taking advantage of the low light pollution; its baroque church holds a Gothic processional cross and its forge is today a museum. It took its name from the río de Riaguas, documented in the 12th century as Río Daguas, to which San Bartolomé was added before 1749 in honor of its patron saint. Around the medieval depopulated site of Briongos, remains of a Roman settlement have been found, with a mosaic and a capital from the 1st century now in the Museo de Segovia. Repopulated during the Reconquista at the expense of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Maderuelo, in 1643 it gained the title of town.
