What to see and do in Caballar

Caballar
Village
Caballar is a municipality in central Segovia, at 1028 metres of altitude and 30 kilometres from the provincial capital, with 78 inhabitants. It formed part of the group of exempted towns and the distribution area of the Arevaci. Its houses, of stone masonry with ashlar at corners and lintels, are spread over three quarters: Umbría and Solana, on the hillside, with narrow streets, and Pavía, on the flat ground. The most representative building is the Romanesque church of la Asunción. The Camino de San Frutos runs through the village, recalling the route this saint took in the 7th century, together with his brother and sister San Valentín and Santa Engracia, towards his retreat in the Hoces del Duratón. Its three springs, the Fuente Santa, the Redonda and the Fresnera, have fed an irrigation-channel system since the Middle Ages.

Nature
The Fuente Santa is the spring at Caballar where, according to tradition, San Valentín and Santa Engracia, siblings of San Frutos, patron saint of the diocese of Segovia, were martyred. It lies to the west of the town centre, next to the municipal dehesa, between the Mulas stream and the Carravillar path, and is the central point of the Camino de San Frutos, which links Segovia with the saint's ermita in the Hoces del Río Duratón. Around it is held the rogation of the Mojadas de Caballar, in which the relics of the saints are immersed in its waters at the request of the villages of the former vicariates of Turégano, Fuentepelayo, Pedraza and Trescasas; the oldest one documented dates from 1593. The present-day templete was built in the 18th century and the nearby ermita in the early 19th.

Activity
In extreme drought the reliquaries of San Valentín and Santa Engracia are immersed in the Fuente Santa. The oldest documented mojada is from 1593 and between that date and 1982 thirty-three were recorded, with rain in twenty-six of them.
