What to see and do in Santiuste de Pedraza

Santiuste de Pedraza
Village
Santiuste de Pedraza is a municipality of about 81 inhabitants of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Pedraza, whose capital, La Mata de Santiuste, sits at 1,104 m of altitude and 28 km from the Segovian provincial capital. It divides its population between Chávida, La Mata de Santiuste, Requijada and Urbanos. Its terrain rises to the Collado de los Pinillos, at 1,667 meters, on the Segovian slope of the range, and then descends toward the valleys of the Sordillo and Cega rivers. In the mid-19th century the municipality had 315 inhabitants, considerably more than today.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Vegas
Monument
In Requijada stands this 12th-century church, considered one of the great examples of Segovian Romanesque; it was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1969 and rises beside the deserted village that gives it its name.
Requijada, a municipality until 1847
Curiosity
Requijada was an independent municipal council until 1847, when it was integrated into Santiuste de Pedraza; remains of a Roman villa have been documented in its district and it preserves a forge and a washing place among its twenty present-day inhabitants.
The procession of 6 September
Activity
Every 6 September the carving of the Virgen de las Vegas travels in procession along the road that separates its church from a nearby hermitage, the festival that brings together the residents of the municipality's four settlements.
The valleys of the Sordillo and the Cega
Nature
The municipality is shared between the valleys carved by the rivers Sordillo and Cega, dominated by the Collado de los Pinillos, which reaches 1,667 metres; the main village sits at 1,104 metres above sea level.
