What to see and do in Turégano

Turégano
Village
Turégano is a town of about 1,007 inhabitants in the district of La Campiña, in the valleys of the Pirón and Cega rivers, documented since 1116 under the name Torodano, an evolution that gave rise to the current place name. Its castle, crowned by the church of San Miguel built into its fabric, was for eight centuries the seat of the episcopal lordship of Segovia, following the town's donation by Urraca de Castilla in 1123 to the first bishop of the restored diocese; between 1425 and 1442 it housed, six months a year, the Chancery and the Audiencia (royal court) of the kingdom, and it was also a temporary residence of the Castilian monarchs and the seat of the Cortes in the 14th and 15th centuries. Antonio Pérez, secretary to Philip II, was imprisoned in its castle. The church of Santiago holds polychrome Romanesque reliefs.
Castle-church of San Miguel
Monument
At the end of the twelfth century Bishop Pedro de Agén raised on the old castro a Romanesque church of three naves with a triple-apsed chevet; in the fifteenth century it was enveloped by a castle, so that the church shows its tower above the battlements.
The donation of Queen Urraca
Historical milestone
The documented history of Turégano begins in 1125, when Queen Urraca of Castile donated the locality to Pedro de Agén, first bishop of Segovia. From then on and for centuries the town remained under the dominion of the Segovian see.
Juan Arias Dávila fortifies the church
Historical milestone
The bishop of Segovia Juan Arias Dávila ordered in the 1470s that the Romanesque church of San Miguel be surrounded by a perimeter castle. From that work was born the unusual silhouette that makes Turégano a unique case in Castile.
National monument since 1931
Curiosity
The ensemble of castle and church was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) on 3 June 1931, one of the first files of the Second Republic in the province, precisely for that fusion of fortress and Romanesque church.
