What to see and do in Pelayos del Arroyo

Pelayos del Arroyo
Village
Pelayos del Arroyo is a Segovian hamlet of about 45 inhabitants whose territory includes as an exclave the locality of Tenzuela, an independent municipality until 1842; around 1120 the concejo gave the place to the bishop of Segovia Pedro de Agen, and after the Guerra de las Comunidades the bishopric sold it to the Duke of Béjar. Its parish church, dedicated to San Vicente Mártir, is an example of rural Segovian Romanesque built between the 12th and 13th centuries, with remains of mural paintings, a Baroque altarpiece and a notable doorway. It also preserves a water mill and a farrier's frame. Local tradition recalls the Tuerto de Pirón, a bandit from neighbouring Santo Domingo de Pirón who attacked churches and roads, whose most legendary exploit was the assault on the church of Tenzuela.
Church of San Vicente Mártir
Monument
The church of San Vicente Mártir, in Pelayos del Arroyo, is a Catholic temple in rural Romanesque style whose construction dates back to the 12th-13th centuries. It preserves capitals carved with birds with women's heads and monstrous animals, a Baroque altarpiece and remains of mural paintings, and a bell gable added above the original apse that betrays the alterations undergone over the centuries. On 16 January 1981 it was declared a historic-artistic monument of national character (an earlier heritage-protection category, predecessor of the Bien de Interés Cultural) by a royal decree that specifically highlighted its Romanesque mural paintings and its arcades with exquisite capitals; since then it has held the status of Bien de Interés Cultural.
From the mitre to the Duke of Béjar
Historical milestone
Around 1120 Pelayos del Arroyo belonged to the territorial domain of Segovia cathedral; after the War of the Comunidades the bishopric sold the place to the Duke of Béjar, and the lordship thus passed from ecclesiastical to noble hands.
