What to see and do in Cubillo

Cubillo
Village
Cubillo, in the Community of Town and Land of Pedraza, takes its name from the hollow with a spring where it sits, amid mountains and the peneplain of the Sierra de Guadarrama, about 25 kilometres from Segovia. Resettled during the Reconquista, it appears documented as El Cubiello in 1247. The Romanesque church of San Juan ante Portam Latinam, with a half-drum apse, holds a 16th-century Segovian silver processional cross and a 1778 Cordoban rococo chalice; next to it stands the ermita of San Roque, and the village preserves houses with Arab tiles and Segovian sgraffito, a mill, a forge and traditional dovecotes. Its 74 inhabitants celebrate San Roque on 16 August and the patronal festivities on 6 May. Today an Iberian safari park with a bison-breeding centre operates in its municipal area.
Processional cross of Cubillo
Monument
The Romanesque church of San Juan, roofed with a barrel vault, keeps several altarpieces and a processional cross wrought in Segovia in the third quarter of the sixteenth century, the most valuable piece in this village of 74 households.
Dovecotes and sgraffiti of Cubillo
Curiosity
The settlement preserves dovecotes, an old forge and a farrier's stocks, with whitewashed façades decorated with Segovian esgrafiado; the place appears as El Cubiello in cathedral documents of 1247.
