El Tuerto de Pirón Curiosity · Santo Domingo de Pirón, Alfoz de Segovia, Segovia Image of Santo Domingo de Pirón, not of the place itself. A 19th-century bandit born in this area, he robbed the rich and raided churches and roads until he became a popular hero; from him came the saying that in Santo Domingo de Pirón there was a thief in every house. His name was Fernando Delgado Sanz (Santo Domingo de Pirón, 30 May 1846 - Valencia, 5 July 1914), and he received his nickname from a cloud that had covered one of his eyes since childhood, which he hid with a patch; he operated in the Sierra de Guadarrama and in the basins of the Pirón and Lozoya rivers, and is considered the last bandit of the sierra. He learned to read, write and do arithmetic, something exceptional for the time. His criminal career began in 1866, when his former sweetheart married another man under family pressure; after his death, his exploits became popular legend.
