What to see and do in Ortigosa del Monte

Ortigosa del Monte
Village
Ortigosa del Monte is a municipality in the province of Segovia, at 1,094 m altitude, beside the río Milanillos. Its name, documented since 1247 as Ortigosiella, comes from the Latin urticam, "nettle", and the surname "del Monte" alludes to a nearby holm-oak wood; its resettlers came from the Tierra de Cameros in Rioja. It belonged to the Sexmo de San Millán of the Comunidad de Ciudad y Tierra de Segovia, and Bezoya water has been bottled here since Tomás Pascual acquired the spring in 1974. A locality of about 608 inhabitants, its church of San Julián holds a Gothic stone pulpit; on its Berrocal, a site of geological interest since 2006, granite boulders emerge at the surface, and every year it pays grain to the widows of El Espinar for a 16th-century donation.

Nature
A chaos of granite boulders declared a site of geological interest in 2006; the same stone had been quarried here since Roman times, and today the berrocal is a place to walk among blocks rounded by erosion.
