Abades
Village
Abades is a municipality of the Comunidad de Ciudad y Tierra de Segovia, in the Campiña Segoviana, situated between the rivers Eresma and Milanillos. Its name, already documented in 1116 as Abbatibus, comes from the Latin abbates, plural of abad (abbot), and belonged since the medieval resettlement to the Sexmo de San Millán. At the Castro Pico, its highest point, remains of a Neolithic settlement and an Iberian hillfort have been found; nearby, the Fuente del Pollo, an old brick arch used by shepherds, still channels water to a trough. The church of San Lorenzo bears two sundials on its tower, and two kilometres away stands the ermita de la Virgen de los Remedios, whose image arrived from America. It has about 849 inhabitants.
