What to see and do in Otero de Herreros

Otero de Herreros
Village
Otero de Herreros is a Segovian town of about 987 inhabitants, on the northern slope of the sierra de Guadarrama, at the foot of the Mujer Muerta massif. It arose as a quarter of the vanished village of Ferreros, iron in Latin, abandoned at the end of the 15th century, and its new name refers to the herreros, metalworkers: it is believed that metals were already being extracted and smelted in the comarca in Roman times, of which smelting furnaces and a large slag heap remain at the Cerro de los Almadenes site, along with copper and silver mines documented since 1601. In its plaza Mayor the granite sockets where the planks were fitted for the bull runs are still preserved. Its Gothic church of the Santos Justo y Pastor holds one of the finest silver collections in the province.
Almadenes Hill
Monument
A Roman archaeological site located in Otero de Herreros (Segovia), at the foot of the Sierra del Quintanar, in the Presierra de Guadarrama, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) by the Junta de Castilla y León on 9 June 2022, following excavations that a team from the Sociedad Española de Historia de la Arqueología has been carrying out since 2009. The site preserves the locations of smelting furnaces, wells, a main trench and a drainage gallery: the infrastructure of a Roman copper- and silver-mining operation that gave its name to the neighbouring settlement of Ferreros. The hill sits on a granite dome with copper outcrops, between the streams of la Escoria and el Quejigal, where mine entrances, spoil heaps and channels from the old mining water infrastructure can still be seen.
