Vegas de Matute
Village
Vegas de Matute is a locality of about 370 inhabitants in the Community of City and Land of Segovia, 19 kilometres from the capital, which grew out of a district of the deserted medieval village of Matute, located a kilometre and a half away, which gave it its name. Its church of Santo Tomás de Canterbury, a Gothic monument declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), was designed by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón around 1540 and enlarged in the 17th century with a Baroque main altarpiece. It now lives on mountain livestock farming; lime was formerly fired in kilns, remains of which still survive, such as those in the Zancao district, and kaolin was also extracted from a mine. In September it holds the Fiesta de los Caleros (Festival of the Lime-Burners), in memory of that trade.
