What to see and do in Palazuelos de Eresma

Palazuelos de Eresma
Village
Palazuelos de Eresma is a Segovian municipality of about 6,100 inhabitants, on the banks of the río Eresma, which until the 1916 naming reform was called simply Palazuelos. It has been home since 1959 to the DYC whisky distillery and preserves the church of la Asunción, in late Gothic style, the remains of a Roman villa with a Visigothic necropolis, and a Civil War bunker. The río Cambrones also runs through its territory, flowing into the Eresma at the Pontón Alto reservoir, the boundary with La Granja; to the south, on the border with Trescasas and Rascafría, the territory reaches 2,042 metres at El Cancho. Urban growth in recent decades has added several housing developments to the original core, among them Segovia XXI, built on the former Quitapesares estate.
Reservoir of el Pontón Alto
Nature
Built in 1993 on the Eresma at the foot of the sierra, the Pontón Alto reservoir regulates the comarca's water supply; its shores, between the peak of La Atalaya and El Cancho, have become an area for walking and birdwatching.
The Palazuelos whisky distillery
Food and drink
In 1959 Nicomedes García Gómez built a whisky distillery here that made use of the water of the sierra and Castilian barley; it was the first of its kind in Spain and remains the municipality's chief industrial heritage.
The legend of the Mujer Muerta
Curiosity
The profile of the sierra that closes the horizon to the south traces a recumbent female figure; the legend tells that a mother asked to die so as to keep her two sons from killing each other, and the snow covered her, turning her into a mountain.
