Peralejos de Abajo
Village
Peralejos de Abajo is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in Castile and León, part of the comarca of Vitigudino and the sub-comarca of the Tierra de Vitigudino, with an area of 19.68 km² and 162 inhabitants. Its name, already documented in 1169 as Perrelegio, alluding to the stony character of the terrain, evolved into Peralejos de Abajo in the 16th century. It was a lordship of the Order of Santiago from the 12th century until 1873, when it passed to the diocese of Salamanca. An important pottery center until the 1970s, when its last potter died, it celebrates on February 3 the festival of its patron saint San Blas, with a procession and the blessing of gargantillas (necklaces) that protect the people of Peralejos from throat ailments; every first Saturday of August it hosts a Spanish-Portuguese agri-food fair.
