What to see and do in Masueco

Masueco
Village
Masueco is a village of about 274 inhabitants in Vitigudino, in Salamanca, in Las Arribes del Duero, a natural park bordering Portugal, 97 km from the capital. Its church of San Nicolás de Bari has a Gothic-Isabelline tower from the Lanestosa lineage of stonemasons, and on the Corporario path a stone Vettonian boar sculpture was found. On its boundary with Pereña de la Ribera falls the Pozo de los Humos, a waterfall on the río de las Uces that drops more than 40 metres between gorges and vegetation, one of the park's greatest attractions; the same river, dotted with flour mills now in ruins, flows into the Duero between the two municipalities. The altitude of the town centre, 684 metres, contrasts with the 340 metres at the mouth of the río de las Uces.
Pozo de los Humos
Nature
The Pozo de los Humos is a waterfall on the río de las Uces, on the boundary between Masueco, on its left bank, and Pereña de la Ribera, on the right, in the northwest of Salamanca province, within the Arribes del Duero natural park. It originates at an abrupt change in the rock caused by a geological fault that brings granite into contact with more erodible metamorphic rocks; the river plunges down a granite wall in a free fall of fifty metres that, on reaching the bottom, raises a cloud of vapour, hence its name. From Masueco, along the slope of the Roblea, a walkway leads to the top of the waterfall, opposite Palla Rubia, in Pereña, where a cave preserves rock art. The flow suitable for visiting it runs from December to May and, according to local tradition, it has never snowed there.
