La Zarza de Pumareda
Village
La Zarza de Pumareda is a hamlet of around 131 inhabitants in La Ramajería, comarca of Vitigudino, Salamanca, part of whose territory lies within the Arribes del Duero Nature Park. Documented in the Middle Ages as Sarça de Conosapo, its name comes from the plant zarza, meaning bramble, a common place-name element in the Leonese repopulation, as in Cerezal de Peñahorcada or El Manzano; the surname Pumareda may have been added in the 15th century, when its lands were divided between García de Ledesma and the licenciado Pumareda, of Asturian or Leonese origin, since pumareda means apple orchard in Leonese. The repopulation followed the Galician model of small, closely spaced hamlets, a pattern that made several of them unsustainable. Its residents have been recovering tombs and remains of medieval hermitages scattered across the territory.
