Bañobárez
Village
Bañobárez is a town of around 277 inhabitants in El Abadengo, comarca of Vitigudino, in the northwest of Salamanca province, 92 kilometres from the provincial capital; the río la Ribera runs through its territory, within the Arribes del Duero. There were Roman settlements on what is now the Medinilla estate, and in the nearby villages of Arévalo and Arevalillo, which gradually lost population towards the 9th century in favour of the prosperous San Felices de los Gallegos. Bañobárez, formerly called Vañevárez, took shape at the end of the 12th century, during the repopulation carried out by the kings of León, who granted El Abadengo to the Order of the Temple; after the Order's dissolution, the territory passed to the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo. Its church of San Pedro Apóstol, built of granite in the 15th-16th centuries, holds a Renaissance altarpiece considered one of the finest in the diocese, gilded in 1583.
