What to see and do in Villavieja de Yeltes

Villavieja de Yeltes
Village
Villavieja de Yeltes is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the comarca of Vitigudino, within the sub-comarca of El Abadengo, at an altitude of 741 metres and watered by the río Yeltes, which has given the village its added name since 1916. Its original place name, “Villar de la Vieja”, documented since the medieval repopulation by the Leonese kings, was shortened over time into today's Villavieja. Until the mid-19th century it belonged to the so-called Campo de Camaces, within the Tierra de Ciudad Rodrigo. With around 676 inhabitants, it had an industrial past unusual for the comarca: around 1900 it had close to fifty shoemaking workshops and eighteen tanneries. The arrival of the railway in 1883 also boosted the export of its granite.
