What to see and do in Villoria

Villoria
Village
Villoria is a village of about 1,239 inhabitants in the comarca of Las Villas, in the province of Salamanca, sited on sedimentary land from the Tertiary era which, owing to a fault reaching Alba de Tormes, is of great geological interest for the study of how the Duero basin was formed. Founded during the medieval resettlement carried out by the kings of León, it was the capital and head of the quarter of Villoria, one of the districts of the jurisdiction of Salamanca within the kingdom of León, and became known as Villoria la Mayor —as against the smaller neighbouring Villoruela— because its name has been read as villa aurea, golden town. In the mid-19th century, according to Madoz's Dictionary, it had 700 registered inhabitants, considerably fewer than today.
The church of San Pedro of Villoria
Monument
Built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, it preserves intact its original Romanesque apse and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) on 7 July 1993. It presides over the Plaza de la Constitución, in the centre of what was the capital of the quarter of Villoria.
The archaeological area of La Vega
Monument
To the west of the settlement stretches the site of an ancient Roman villa, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) on 23 December 1992. The protected area is divided between the municipal districts of Villoria and neighbouring Villoruela.
Villa Aurea, the golden town
Curiosity
Scholars dispute the origin of the name: some derive it from the Latin villa aurea, golden villa, and others from an owner called Oria or from a pejorative suffixation of the Romance villa, related to the modern word villorrio.
The head of the cuarto of Villoria
Historical milestone
Villoria was the capital and head of the quarter that bore its name, one of the four divisions of the jurisdiction of Salamanca within the Kingdom of León. Its importance earned it the popular nickname of Villoria la Mayor as against adjoining Villoruela.
The Villoria fault
Nature
The Tertiary sedimentary terrain of the municipal district is cut by a fault that runs between the settlement and Alba de Tormes; geologists consider it a phenomenon of great interest for understanding the formation of the Duero basin.
The pelota development centre
Activity
The Club de Pelota Las Villas was born in 1993 through the Castile and León pelota training centre and the town council, with the aim of allowing local players to compete at national level in this sport of traditional roots.
The festivities of the Virgen de la Vega
Activity
Villoria's festive calendar is one of the densest in the comarca: quintos in January, Santa Águeda and carnival in February, the festivals of the Voto in April, Corpus Christi in spring and, in September, the Virgen de la Vega, the village's main festival.
