What to see and do in Santiago de la Puebla

Santiago de la Puebla
Village
Santiago de la Puebla is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the Tierra de Peñaranda, with about 280 inhabitants. Prehistoric remains, Roman coins and mosaics, and Visigothic pieces have been found in its territory, along with the start of a medieval bridge that formed part of a branch of the Vía de la Plata between the Calzada de Béjar and Medina del Campo. Founded during the Repoblación under the patronage of Santiago, it was disputed between the Crown and the council of Alba de Tormes, which even sacked it in 1304, until Ferdinand IV settled the dispute in favour of the infanta Blanca de Portugal. In the late 14th century it passed to the Rojas, a lineage that in 1537 would obtain the title of marquis of Poza. The arcaded main square, the church of Santiago Apóstol and the San José hospice-asylum order its townscape.

Monument
Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) on 3 June 1931, the parish church of Santiago is the town's main draw and the driver of an incipient cultural tourism in a municipality of fewer than three hundred inhabitants.

Monument
In the immediate surroundings of the village the springing of a medieval bridge is preserved that formed part of a secondary branch of the Vía de la Plata, the one linking the Béjar road with Medina del Campo across these plains.

Curiosity
Beside the church, the town preserves the Hospital Asilo de San José and an arcaded Plaza Mayor, as well as private emblazoned houses; the ensemble recalls the importance of a settlement that litigated with Macotera over its boundaries from 1483.
