What to see and do in Alaraz

Alaraz
Village
Alaraz is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the Tierra de Peñaranda, with about 440 inhabitants at 884 metres, on the border with Ávila and beside the river Gamo; it is the southernmost municipality of the Campo de Peñaranda. Bronze Age remains have been found at Los Molinos and Iron Age remains at Los Ocuestos, where there was a Vettonian oppidum abandoned after the Roman conquest; Visigothic slate tablets from the hermitage of the Cristo are also preserved, now in the Museo de Salamanca. From the 8th century the Arabs gave the village its name, “field of cultivation”, and in the 10th century it passed to the Kingdom of León after Ramiro II defeated Abd al-Rahman III. Its church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, completed in 1555 by Juan Sánchez del Castillo, covers the crossing with a Gothic vault with tiercerons.
The church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo of Alaraz
Monument
Its semi-hexagonal main chapel, covered with a tierceron vault that forms an octagon, is the work of Juan Sánchez del Castillo, completed in 1555, and recalls that of Mosén Rubí in Ávila. The Baroque altarpiece, by Cristóbal de Carvajal, was gilded in 1704.
The hermitage of the Cristo del Monte
Monument
Built in granite with a single nave and Baroque roofs, it holds an eighteenth-century high altarpiece carved by Antonio Martín Regato and gilded by the Salamanca craftsman Manuel de la Peña, and the carving of the Most Holy Cristo del Monte, of excellent workmanship.
The storks of the Gamo riverside
Nature
The passage of the river Gamo leaves a lush bank of poplars, white poplars and ash trees among holm oak woods. Storks nest in such numbers on the parish church that their nests have come to put the roof of the building at risk.
The Iberian ham of Alaraz
Food and drink
The municipality produces Iberian pork products of recognised quality, with several workshops in operation; on the dehesa of Garcigrande, within the municipal district, a herd of fighting bulls also grazes, another mark of identity of these lands.
