What to see and do in Salmoral

Salmoral
Village
Salmoral is a Salamancan villa in the comarca of the Tierra de Peñaranda, with just over a hundred inhabitants (107 according to the 2025 census) on a territory of 23 km² adjoining the border with the province of Ávila, 52 kilometres south-east of the city of Salamanca. Its name comes from the Latin sal muria, brackish water, alluding to the salty soils of the area. The landscape marks the transition between the cereal plains of the Submeseta Norte, which open northward onto the Tierra de Campos, and the dehesa lands of holm oaks and granite outcrops that herald, to the south, the sierras of Ávila. A land of wheat and barley once worked in alternate-year fallowing, it celebrates its main festival on 16 August, the feast of San Roque.

The saline soils of Salmoral
Nature
The name comes from sal muria through an abundantive form meaning «area of saline soils». It corresponds to discharge zones where the water rises slowly from the aquifer and becomes mineralised, leaving salts on the surface and on the edges of the lagoons.
